On July 19, 2016, Attorney Murphy presented on the topic of “Assisting Financially Distressed Students” at the annual Student Legal Services Section Conference, National Legal Aid and Public Defenders Association (“NLADA”) in Iverness, Florida. The Section is composed of legal professionals who work in college student legal services offices throughout the country NLADA is America’s oldest and largest nonprofit association devoted to excellence in the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford counsel.
In his presentation, Attorney Murphy provided conference attendees practical training with respect to both Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”) with a particular focus on how current and former college students have become victims of abuse by unscrupulous collectors and lenders. As a result of his experience as lead counsel in nationwide and regional FDCPA student loan class actions, Attorney Murphy provided insight into the growing student loan crisis and how student loan borrowers are being subjected to hard-handed collectors without having the ability to repay their loans.
